Auto News - Jeep Grand Cherokee Struggled in Swerve Test: Consumer Reports

Auto News - Jeep Grand Cherokee Struggled in Swerve Test: Consumer ReportsConsumer Reports is, to an extent, corroborating Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld‘s accusations that the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a rollover hazard.

The group isn’t outright agreeing with the results, but it weighed in on the issue today and discussed the results of a similar test it conducted on the 2011 model. In the Consumer Reports test, vehicles are also taken through a double lane change maneuver meant to simulate swerving away from an object then back into the original lane, though their test is “less severe” in key areas.

While Consumer Reports didn’t experience the tires lifting or separating from the rims like Teknikens Varld did, the group’s 2011 report noted that the V6 equipped Laredo “hopped and skipped sideways.” The “Limited” trim level with a V8 didn’t have the same issues.

After noticing the issue, the group reported its findings to Jeep, prompting recalibrated stability control and a software update that reportedly fixed the problem.

That leaves one question: in what ways was Consumer Reports easier on the Jeep than Teknikens Varld? As it happens, very important ways that might prove the Swedish magazine isn’t as crazy as Chrysler wants everyone to believe.

First, the test is run on a longer course with less steering wheel play and therefore a lower chance for a rollover. Second, they only run with a driver and full tank of gas, rather than the full passenger load and the sand bags the Swedes use to test maximum capacity.

Chrysler’s changes to the 2011 Grand Cherokee suggest that there was a problem with the car — probably one it thought was fixed. And it’s true that those fixes helped it to pass the less extreme Consumer Reports tests.

Auto News - Justin Bieber Proves Nobody Knows What a Fisker is

Auto News - Justin Bieber Proves Nobody Knows What a Fisker is. Justin Bieber’s chrome-wrapped Fisker Karma looks more like a spaceship to the general public than what CEO Henrik Fisker would probably prefer: a car identifiable with his brand.

The young pop star managed to prove that while flying along highway 101 under hot pursuit by several SUVs, as a number of 911 calls attest. Some were sure it was a Corvette, others said it was a stainless steel Ferrari. “The one is totally, totally silver. I’ve never seen anything like it; It looks like a Spaceship,” one caller said.

Of course, Biebier’s bodacious car is understandably difficult to recognize in direct sunlight, where anything short of polarized lenses will probably leave you open to burned retinas. Still, it’s a little surprising that nobody even came close to correctly identifying the car.

“Uh, maybe a Corvette? Some kind of a race car,” one caller said. “It’s a metallic silver. You can not miss it,” she said. Another man said he saw “five or six or seven SUVs chasing a silver Ferrari.” Someone else said he saw a chrome plated Maserati four-door.

This could be a good thing for Fisker. It means nobody knows what its cars are, but that also suggests that the company’s recent controversies have fallen from the public eye.

Auto News - Bill Gates Invests in Engine Company EcoMotors

Auto News - Bill Gates Invests in Engine Company EcoMotors. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is investing money into EcoMotors, an engine development company that is in the process of designing a new age of efficient engine.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will be receiving a $32.5 million investment, led by Braemar Energy Ventures. Gates and Khosla Ventures are also in on the investment, although exactly who put in what dollar amount has not been revealed.

EcoMotors builds opposed-piston-opposed-cylinder engines, which provide a very efficient use of gasoline, or diesel. Gates believes that this could be a large breakthrough in engine design. He invests in companies like this because Gates wants to help “create affordable energy that lessens the impact of climate change.” The company claims that its engine provide a 50% reduction in both fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Green technology needs investment to succeed, and it is good to see Bill Gates helping the cause.

Auto News - Porsche 918 Spyder to Get Track Pack Option

Auto News - Porsche 918 Spyder to Get Track Pack Option. Inspired by race cars the Porsche 918 Spyder will be a truly awesome performance machine when it hits the market, but the German sports car maker is already planning an even more capable version.

From the company that brings you the 911 GT3 RS, essentially a street legal race car, the 918 Spyder will get a Race Track package aimed at cutting weight and thereby improving overall performance. Rather than add power, this reportedly pricey package will delete items, including much of the interior luxuries and even the paint, dropping the overall curb weight by over 60 lbs.

Standard curb weight is expected to be below 3,700 lbs, which isn’t overly light, but considering all the electronics and batteries involved, it’s not too hefty. Regardless, moving all that mass shouldn’t be too hard with the electric motors mated to a 4.6-liter V8 with power of around 770 hp.

Auto News - Acura ILX Could Go Racing in World Challenge, Grand Am Says PR Boss

Auto News - Acura ILX Could Go Racing in World Challenge, Grand Am Says PR Boss. Yesterday Acura announced it would field a two car effort at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill race later this year using its new ILX sports sedan. Now Acura has revealed that racing plans for the ILX might not stop there.

Speaking to AutoGuide, Acura public relations manager Gary Robinson dished on the brand’s musings for a future motorsports program. “We would like to see the ILX racing in a higher profile series,” he said. “Considering where Civic Si and TSX are today. It would make a great Grand Am or World Challenge Car.”

Robinson did, however, qualify his statement, noting that “nothing is decided yet…”.

Both Acura and parent-company Honda already have racing initiatives in place in both series. Though not an official factory-backed effort, Realtime Racing has been competing in the SCCA World Challenge series for years, and is currently racing a pair of TSX models. And with rumors that the TSX will be axed in the near future, the ILX could take its place.

Honda also announced earlier this year a major commitment to World Challenge and Grand Am, backing the Toronto-based Compass360 racing team as it competes in both series.

Auto News - SRT Viper GTS-R to Make Racing Debut at Petit Le Mans

Auto News - SRT Viper GTS-R to Make Racing Debut at Petit Le Mans. Earlier in April, SRT revealed its Viper GTS-R race car that is destined to return to the American Le Mans Series this year and now we know when.

Ryan Hunter-Reay confirmed that he’ll be part of the Petit Le Mans driver lineup for the new SRT Viper race car, and joins Kuno Wittmer, Dominik Farnbacher, and Marc Goossens as confirmed drivers for the team. Though SRT hasn’t confirmed which races the Viper will make an appearance at, it’s widely believed that the Viper will participate in several races before Petit.

Hunter-Reay, who is currently the IndyCar points leader, will focus on capturing the IndyCar championship before hopping into the SRT Viper. Thankfully the Petit Le Mans race occurs after the IndyCar season ends.

Auto News - 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Officially Revealed in Japan

Auto News - 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Officially Revealed in Japan. No big surprise here, but Mazda has given its popular MX-5 Miata sports car a refresh for the 2013 model year, which is now on sale over in Japan.

A few days ago, photos of the refreshed Miata leaked out onto the Internet, showing off its new CX-5-ey front end. The Japanese automaker has now made the changes official, announcing that the MX-5 Miata not only got aesthetic adjustment, but also a new pedestrian safety feature, and a few performance tweaks.

The new MX-5 front end benefits from a more pointed black mesh grille, while the foglight housings and lip spoiler have been altered for a sportier and more sleek appearance. Buyers who opt for the power-retractable hardtop also receive new 17-inch wheels while Dolphin Gray Mica will replace Metropolitan Gray Mica as a color option. A tan interior option is also available to buyers.

Mazda also decided to differentiate its hardtop models from its soft top models; the soft top variant has its headlights black-tinted, while the wheels are dark gray, while the interior door handles get a black treatment, and the gauge surrounds are finished off in a dark gray. The hardtop version has all of its accent pieces painted in silver rather than a darker shade.

While no modifcations were done to the powerplant, Mazda did retune the ECU on the manual transmission MX-5 to provide a more linear throttle response. Braking performance has also been altered, with the brake booster being modified to better modulate braking performance on the roadster. Lastly, the MX-5 went on a tiny diet with the redesigned 17-inch wheels, new front bumper, and wiring harness.

Most notable of all the new features on the 2013 MX-5 however is the Active Bonnet. When the vehicle senses a frontal impact under certain conditions, the rear edge of the hood will prop up in order to create more space between the hood and engine compartment. The automaker hopes this reduces the risk of injury if a pedestrian is hit by the car.

Unfortunately there’s no confirmation if the American Miata’s upcoming facelift will resemble the changes seen on the Japanese model, but we highly doubt that the automaker would deviate from what works.

Auto News - Next Generation BMW X1 Going Front Wheel Drive

Here is Auto News - Next Generation BMW X1 Going Front Wheel Drive. In hopes of lowering production costs while increasing value, the German automaker will be utilizing a shared, front-wheel drive platform for the second-generation BMW X1.

Scheduled to hit the market in 2015, the second-generation BMW X1 will share its new platform with future MINI Countryman models and the new 1-Series GT model. With the front-wheel drive platform, the automaker will be able to increase the interior space in the small SUV thanks to the new space-saving transverse mounting of the engine.

The new platform, called UKL, will underpin a new BMW Group of vehicles including the second-generation Countryman, and will be combined with a Haldex-style, multi-plate clutch to give the new X1 four-wheel drive capability as well – just like the current Countryman model. With the move to a front-wheel drive platform, it all but ensures that BMW will only offer four-cylinder powerplants in the next-generation X1 model. The German automaker has already confirmed it will not be working on a six-cylinder powerplant for transverse mounting.

Auto News - Volvo Fined $1.5 Million For Delay in Reporting Defects

Here is Auto News - Volvo Fined $1.5 Million For Delay in Reporting Defects. Volvo has agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine because it failed to report safety defects to the federal government in a timely manner.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act states that a car manufacturer must notify NHTSA within five days of becoming aware of a potential safety risk or a non-compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Volvo has agreed to pay the fines, although it didn’t disclose how long it waited to report the defect. The recall was regarding front airbags that were not deploying in four different Volvo models.

The company also said it will make internal changes to its recall decision-making process to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

“With millions of vehicles traveling our highways every single day, we take our responsibility to safeguard the driving public very seriously and we expect automakers to do the same,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Manufacturers are required to handle safety issues both quickly and appropriately.”

Auto News - Audi TT S-line Competition Package Offers Big Bang for your Buck

Auto News - Audi TT S-line Competition Package Offers Big Bang for your Buck. Audi is giving its customers a reason to be happy by announcing its TT Coupe S line competition special edition, which combines two previously separate packages, cutting approximately 50 percent of the total cost out.

Of course, nothing is ever free, and this is no exception. The package is already available worldwide and costs €4,300, or about $5,400 USD. For that price, you’re getting a laundry list of add-ons that would have cost a lot more last year.

The package offers to make lower-end models with the 211-hp engine look more like their aggressive S line siblings. That look comes courtesy of items like a front splitter and rear diffuser, air inlet and side sills, 19-inch wheels, a fixed rear spoiler and more come together to set the car apart. Probably the most generous piece of the package’s exterior portion is that it includes a no-cost pearl option with every paint color. While a meaner exterior is part of the bargain, it’s hardly the whole deal.

Inside, customers also get the S line treatment with perforated Alcantara upholstery, black leather and silver stitching. The steering wheel follows after the TT RS with a flat bottom and stronger contours. Expect to find more aluminum as well, while other small touches like S line embroidery in the seats further set it apart.

As wonderful as all this might sound to someone who wants a hot-looking TT without suffering the price, we’ve got to wonder what’s really going on. It’s not as if someone dumped rainbows and sunshine schnapps into Audi CEO Rupert Stadler’s coffee. Instead, we’re hoping this probably means a much overdue third generation is around the corner.

Whether or not that’s actually the case, anyone in the market for a new TT will be able to take advantage of the generous new upgrade.

Luxury Cars - 2013 Acura ZDX Will Get Redesign, New Technology

Here is Luxury Cars - 2013 Acura ZDX Will Get Redesign, New Technology. The Acura ZDX hasn’t exactly been a hot seller in the United States, so it’s no surprise that the Japanese automaker is revamping its crossover for the 2013 model year.

In 2011, the ZDX sold a disappointing 1,564 units, and Acura announced that changes will be coming for the 2013 model, including revised styling and new technology. Unfortunately no photos of the 2013 ZDX were released (2012 model pictured above), but the automaker did elaborate that the ZDX will only come in one trim level hoping to offer “greater value on a luxury scale.”

We expect an official debut of the 2013 ZDX in the coming months; the updated model should hit dealerships by October.

Auto News - Ferrari 458-Powered Fiat 500 is a Juke R Killer

Here are Auto News - Ferrari 458-Powered Fiat 500 is a Juke R Killer. Before gasoline-electric hybrids became a staple of the automotive world, enthusiasts referred to a ‘hybrid’ as a vehicle sporting an engine from a different car, shoehorned to fit in order to give a smaller chassis more power.

These days, the art of engine transplants is still popular, but this concept from Lazzarini Design takes it over the top. When one dreams, you might as well dream big, and that’s exactly what Lazzarini Design did with this custom Fiat 500.

Now before we go one, this isn’t real… yet. The tuning firm is soliciting anyone with over half a million dollars to make this dream become a reality.

The numbers seem a little bit off, but Lazzarini’s concept widens the rear of the Fiat 500 by almost 12 inches on each side (they said 300 mm, we think it should be more like 30 mm) while the front would be widened by a tad under eight inches (again, probably more like 20 mm and not 200 mm) on each side. The wheelbase would be lengthened by 12 inches to accommodate its new powerplant: a 4.5-liter V8 taken from a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Outrageous? Absolutely! What’s even funnier is the fact that Lazzarini Design said that it would detune the powerplant from 570-hp to 550-hp to help balance the car during “fast shift operations.” It also wants to lighten the load down to 2,200 lbs making this widebody Fiat 500 boast the craziest horsepower-to-weight ratio imaginable.

We have to applaud all the thought and work that went into these renderings. And if this was to become a reality, it would probably be pretty insane. Too bad it isn’t April 1st, this studio is serious.

Auto News - The Facts Behind Audi’s 11th Le Mans Victory

Here are Auto News - The Facts Behind Audi’s 11th Le Mans Victory. Last week, Audi captured its 11th Le Mans victory in the last 13 years, but the big news was the technology involved with achieving this year’s victory for the German automaker.

In 2006, the brand captured its first diesel-powered victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans thanks to its TDI engine, and this year it was the first to ever achieve victory with a hybrid vehicle. Even more astonishing is the fact that all four Audi vehicles that entered the race, finished. Only 33 of the 56 original entrants were able to cross the finish line this year.

While all the attention is on the victory itself, and rightfully so, the German automaker also had the best time in qualifying and the fastest race lap. Those that follow motorsports knows that having achieved either of those hardly guarantees victory on any race weekend. And despite going 6.4 percent faster than last year, Audi managed to reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent on this year’s race cars.

To give you an idea of the improvements made in the race cars’ technology, the winning trio of Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer, and Benoît Tréluyer, last year covered a distance of 3,006 miles with an average speed of 125-mph. This year, the team ran over 3,200 miles with an average speed of over 133 mph. Now it’s worth mentioning this this year the safety cars were only out for a total of two hours and 22 minutes while last year they were out for four hours and 46 minutes, more than twice as long. But that’s another testament to the reliability of Audi’s newest generation of race cars utilizing e-Tron Quattro technology.

Auto News - Kia Racing Optima Claims its First Victory in World Challenge

Here are Auto News - Kia Racing Optima Claims its First Victory in World Challenge. With Michael Galati behind the wheel of the number 36 Kia Motors America Kia Optima, the Korean automaker has captured its first series win in the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge GTS competition.

Galati started from pole – the 24th in his career – before falling behind Jack Baldwin’s Porsche Cayman S and Aaron Povoledo’s Ford Mustang Boss 302S at the start. But it didn’t take long for Galati to reclaim the front spot and was never seriously challenged on his way to victory. As icing on the cake, Kia also captured the second spot in the GTS class giving it a 1-2 finish with Mark Wilkins standing by Galati on the podium. Wilkins also set a new Pirelli World Challenge GTS race lap record with a time of 1:27.214.

It’s an impressive achievement for the Korean automaker, considering that the Optima has only participated in half a dozen or so races.

“This is my favorite track in the world,” Galati said. “I’ve won a lot of races here. I feel at home here. People say Ohio is my home track. This is my home track. I love this track because it’s so fast.”

Auto News - First 2013 SRT Viper Sells for $300,000 at Barrett-Jackson Auction

Here are Auto News - First 2013 SRT Viper Sells for $300,000 at Barrett-Jackson Auction. As we mentioned earlier in the week, the first-ever production SRT Viper was heading to the Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, California with its proceeds benefiting the Austin Hatcher Foundation.

The SRT Viper that was present at the Barrett-Jackson auction wasn’t the actual one being sold, but VIN number-1 2013 SRT Viper just went for $300,000. It’s quite the price to pay, but having the first-ever of a new generation of SRT Vipers is undoubtedly something to be proud of. Instead of just giving away all your personal information so Ford can collect data, the sweepstakes is actually interactive and has multiple ways to enter each day. The free way is to play the game every day and guess what the missing part is in the illustration. Those purchasing parts off the Ford Parts website are also entered into the sweepstakes, while – and this one is pretty comical considering it’s 2012 – you can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Ford and an entry form and mail-in instructions will be sent back. But that just seems silly.

You’re limited to one entry per day just for playing, but you’ll get an additional entry per day if you guess the missing part. A weekly prize of  1:24 scale die-cast model of a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor will be given away until the contest ends. The sweepstakes is already live, and will end on November 18, 2012.

Auto News - Chevrolet Cruze Recalled for Fire Risk: Every Car Included

Here are Auto News - Chevrolet Cruze Recalled for Fire Risk: Every Car Included. Things aren’t looking so hot for the Chevrolet Cruze, or maybe just the opposite depending on your perspective.

GM just announced that it is recalling all 413,418 of its 2011 and 2012 Cruze sedans because of a fire risk in the engine compartment. In all fairness, the recall doesn’t affect cars built after May, but that represents a negligible number compared to the overall figure. The decision comes after scores of complaints for the same issue were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about fires igniting in near-new cars.

“Improper engine oil change procedures on these vehicles can result in the spilling or dripping of oil,” GM said. “If oil contacts hot engine or exhaust system surfaces, and the engine shield, the shield may ignite and burn, resulting in a possible engine compartment fire.”

The automaker also said the necessary repair will take about 30 minutes and will be carried out free of charge.

“The 2011 Chevy Cruze was driven by our daughter. She was driving 35 mph when she noticed smoke coming out of the hood. She pulled over and in a matter of minutes the car was in flames,” one complaint filed with NHTSA said.

How so many vehicles could fall victim to “improper oil changes” is undisclosed. It also isn’t clear how Chevrolet plans to fix something it seems to be blaming on negligent service stations, but one way or another customers are being promised a solution.

News of such a widespread recall can’t be good for business and it leaves GM looking a little silly after receiving its best-ever performance in J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study.

“The most important thing for our customers to know is that we are proactively working to assure the Cruze is the safe and durable car they purchased,” GM Vice President of Global Quality Alicia Boler-Davis wrote in a statement.

Auto News - Toyota Yaris to be Imported from France for US Market

Here are Auto News - Toyota Yaris to be Imported from France for US Market. Starting in May 2013, The Toyota Yaris will be imported to North American markets from a factory in France.

Produced in northern France for the European market since 2001, this is the first Toyota to be produced in Europe and imported to North America.

The Yaris hatchback is a new model for 2012. The French factory will export about 25,000 cars annually to Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico. In order to build cars to the unique tastes and legal requirements of those markets, the factory is being retrofitted. The North American cars have slightly different bumpers, the option of automatic transmissions, a unique 1.5-liter engine and other required safety features.

“This is not only an endorsement of the quality of the cars built by our team members here at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF), but it’s also a significant new business opportunity for our factory and further strengthens TMMF’s position as an important exporter in France,” TMMF president Makoto Sano said.

The strong yen has forced Japanese manufacturers to reconsider domestic car assembly in light of growing costs. Honda has gone so far as to sell Chinese-made Fits in Canada, but this is the latest evolution in that trend.

Auto News - Last New Saabs in US Head to Auction

Here are Auto News - Last New Saabs in US Head to Auction. A stockpile of about 900 Saabs is finally set to be sold off after having sat in three U.S. ports since December 2011 as collateral in the company’s financial snafu.

Half a year later the small army of Swedish cars is finally going up for auction, though not to the general public. The vehicles accumulated after Ally financial claimed Saab missed payments. Starting with the first 300 cars, the holding company will offer lots to Saab dealers in 45 unit increments. While the auctions are restricted to keep most people from bidding, those cars will probably end up in dealer lots soon.

The remaining 600 until will also be auctioned in six lots of 100 each to rental agencies and exporters and will likely never see U.S. sale with the exception of those sold off by the rental companies.

Buying a new Saab probably seems like a risk given the company’s collapse, but we recently reported that the brand’s parts arm will continue to function, meaning owners will be able to maintain their cars even though new vehicle production has ceased.

Auto News - MINI Countryman Coupe Should Be Available in 2013

Here is Auto News - MINI Countryman Coupe Should Be Available in 2013. The MINI Paceman concept, now known as the Countryman Coupe, will likely bow as a 2013 model year car, and be available in the first quarter of the same year.

Having just seen spy photos of the car, it looks production ready, especially due to the fact that the prototype wore a small amount of camo. MINI was not concerned with showing off the car early, which points towards a launch of the car sooner rather than later. A 1.6-liter twin-turbocharged engine sporting 211-hp and 192 lb-ft sourced from the JCW Mini should provide power for the the Countryman Coupe.

When asked about the launch date, MINI said that there is yet to be any official word regarding the model year, name, or specifications on the car, although many reports surfacing online say that an inside MINI source has confirmed the car will come in 2013. Interestingly, in a recent release from the company detailing the 2013 product lineup, the Countryman Coupe was not mentioned.

Reports of more variants coming from MINI however, point towards the Countryman Coupe’s launch in 2013.

Auto News - Volvos Are Too Complicated: CEO Says

This is info about Volvos Are Too Complicated. Things get complex when you put safety tech innovation first, or so Volvo boss Stefan Jacoby is finding as the brand’s cars get increasingly confusing to use.

“Our cars are too complicated for the consumer. Our intention is to have an intuitive car that lets the driver actually feel like he’s in command,” Jacoby said. According to Jacoby, 75 percent of drivers don’t know how to access their car’s full capability.

It’s something he recognizes as a problem, not just for Volvo, but for car companies as a whole. With complicated electronic systems becoming commonplace in cars ranging from the entry level to most expensive, he feels simplicity needs an increasing emphasis.

Jacoby pointed to Apple’s operating systems and ease of use as an example of sophisticated tech that solves such issues with elegance.

“It’s so easy to control. You feel in control of that machine and that gives consumers a big confidence,” he said.

This is info about 2013 Lexus GX 460 Pricing: $53,245 Starting MSRP. Japanese luxury automaker Lexus announced pricing for its GX 460 SUV today representing a $200 increase over lsat year’s model.

Offered in two grades, base and premium, the utility vehicle starts at $54,120 and costs $53,445 including an $875 destination fee. Lexus recently introduced the SportDesign package (pictured above) for the 2012 model year, but it looks like the GX will stay more-or-less the same. That means the same 4.6-liter V8 that makes 301 hp and helps the truck tow up to 6,500 lbs will remain in place for the seven-passenger utility vehicle.

Auto News - 2013 BMW 650i, 550i Getting 45HP Boost

Here is Auto News - 2013 BMW 650i, 550i Getting 45HP Boost. Power in the BMW 5 and 6 Series will increase in 2013 thanks to a little technology sharing between the two models’ flagship big brother, the 7 Series.

BMW confirmed specifically that its 550i, 550i GT, and 650i coupe and convertible will benefit from the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the 7 Series and its Valvetronic variable valve timing technology to offer the power increase.

Despite the power sharing between less costly sedan and coupe models, the X5 and X6 SUVS will still keep the same engine as before. It isn’t clear why BMW chose not to include its popular utility vehicles in the power update, but maybe it has something to do with the current generation X5 having been around for seven years.

Auto Reviews - 2012 Cadillac SRX

The latest of Auto Reviews is 2012 Cadillac SRX. Consider the following car reviews.

Anyone who doubts that Cadillac is back as a genuine player in the luxury vehicle marketplace need only look to the new 2012 SRX as proof.

FAST FACTS

1. The 2012 SRX is powered exclusively by a 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 with 308 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
2. Fuel Economy is rated at 17/24 mpg for front-drive models and 16/23 mpg for AWD.
3. Pricing starts at $36,860 with the top trim Premium model at $47,650.
4. Next year the SRX will get Cadillac’s new CUE telematics system, with iPad like touch controls.
Sure the Escalade is the favorite of the rich and famous who are looking for a big roomy truck that can go from zero to 60 in less than 7 seconds, haul an 8,000 lb trailer, and still pamper the occupants in unrivaled luxury. And the CTS-V is a legitimate rival to German performance sedans. But the re-loaded 2012 SRX, boasting a new engine with class-leading power, is the true favorite where it counts – sales numbers.

Only the Lexus RX sells more vehicles in the mid-size luxury crossover segment, with the SRX Caddy’s most popular model. Better yet, over 70% of SRX customers are first time Cadillac buyers, which bodes well for the brand’s future.

NEW ENGINE FOR 2012
As mentioned, the biggest news for 2012 is the new 3.6-liter, direct-injected V6 motor, similar to the one in the CTS, which puts out 308 horsepower, and 265 lb-ft of torque at a low down 2400 rpm. It’s a huge improvement over the previous year’s offerings of the 3.0-liter V6 or even the 2.8-liter Turbo V6.  And gas mileage on our AWD test car is still a respectable 16 mph city and 23 mpg highway, which is 1 mpg fewer than the standard front wheel drive models. During a 500-mile highway trip, our SRX registered 25.5 mpg when cruising at 70 miles per hour and 23 mpg when at 75 miles per hour. Regular gas is recommended, instead of Premium that was required on last year’s turbo.

Now all those horses still have to move 4,442 lbs of automobile (AWD adds 165lbs to the front wheel drive models). So while acceleration isn’t neck snapping, (zero to 60 is in the 7 second range) the SRX still moves smartly and the 6-speed automatic transmission makes all shifts smoothly and effortlessly, with quickly downshifts for passing maneuvers. The All-wheel-drive model is equipped with an electronic limited-slip differential, and it can route as much as 85 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Also, like the Acura SH-AWD system, it will even send power individually to the left or right wheels for maximum grip and performance.

COMFORTABLE BUT NOT FLOATY

Cadillac paid a lot of attention to the SRX's ride quality. It's firm, not floaty, though it does lean in turns as all SUVs do. Thankfully its relatively minimal and quick side-to-side directional changes won’t upset the car or driver. It also absorbs bad pavement and potholes well, even on our SRX tester with optional 20-inch wheels. Part of the FE3 package, other goodies include adjustable shock absorbers that firm up at the push of a button should you require added sport.

The SRX's steering is well executed, and aids in the sharp handling. It responds quickly, with good feel because it isn’t over boosted. There isn’t much play in the wheel, and the steering system meshes nicely with the suspension. By comparison the Lexus RX feels sloppy. If we have a complaint about the driving experience, it’s the brakes, which are effective in slowing the SRX, but they lack feel.

DESTINCTIVE STYLING INSIDE AND OUT

One of the things we like about the Cadillac is the family resemblance to the other cars in the lineup, which all stand out in the sea of cookie cutter egg shape styling. With the edgy, angular lines, you’ll be able to spot the Cadillac in the parking lot full of Mercedes MLs and Lexus RXs. The front grill isn’t too large, and the profile is nicely swept back with a sloping roofline that has an integrated spoiler. The rear end is muscular with tall taillamps that frame the large hatch opening nicely and dual exhaust tips hint at the performance.

The interior is another bright sport for the brand. It borrows from other GM vehicles, but that’s a good thing. The angularity of the dash shapes fits in nicely with the exterior. The huge panoramic moonroof makes the cabin light and airy.  Brightwork surrounds the drives gauges, the center stack, vents, and console. . . enough to set things off without being gaudy.

The large NAV screen pops up from the dash, and is easy to use and program, and can be set to display a lot of useful information including. A back-up camera and sonar are standard features.

The center stack controls for the radio, heating and air controls are all easy to see, intuitive to use and nicely laid out, unlike most luxury cars that think it is important to look overly busy, and require a complicated overly-fussy iDrive-like dial. Good, simple engineering never goes out of style.

The leather seats are wide, nicely bolstered, and comfortable. Front seats are both heated and cooled, though the latter isn’t overly impressive. The drivers seat cushion also has a pull-out extender for extra thigh support. Electrically adjustable brake and accelerator controls are an excellent amenity – especially for those who aren’t gifted in the height department.

There’s plenty of storage space all around the cabin with a nice large closing compartment at the base of the center stack which has an outlet to charge a phone or MP3 player and store it out of sight. There is another outlet with a USB port and MP3 interface in the large, deep center console. Dual storage compartments in the driver and passenger doors . . . one for small items the other for maps, etc. is another nice touch.  Bluetooth is standard this year on all models.

Soft touch materials on the tops of the doorsills, armrests and center console make spending long hours in the SRX pleasant. The cabin is whisper quiet on the highway thanks to an increased use of sound deadening materials in the engine compartment. The info screen between the tach and speedo offers a host of trip information and even redundant Navigation directions. The Xenon headlights offer excellent illumination going down the road, and the electro-luminescent gauges are smartly lit up at night.

One amenity that goes in our “that’s why the terrorist hate us” file is the heated steering wheel. Seemingly unnecessary for the California folk, anybody who lives in a cold weather climate will love it. Once you have a vehicle with it, you’ll never want another one without it.

The rear seats are heated and comfortable for two large adults, and even the center seat isn’t torturous for an hour or so. Rear passengers can enjoy watching a DVD on the screens built into the rear headrests, plus there’s a separate climate control system back there.

For added storage the rear seats fold down to add to the cargo space with a track system for securing items it necessary.

THE VERDICT

Our all-wheel-drive Premium Collection SRX lists for $48,785. Add on the available $1,395 Entertainment system with the dual screen DVD player plus the destination charge and the price pushes past the $50K mark. That sounds like a lot of money until you go pricing the other vehicles in its class. Then it looks quite reasonable. Still, you don’t need to spend $50,000 to get a decent SRX with the base model priced at $36,860.

The Cadillac SRX is an excellent luxury crossover, being just the right size between a monster SUV and a cramped crossover. A great overall package, it is quick, luxurious and delivers plenty of content for comparatively little cash.

Auto Reviews - 2013 GMC Terrain Denali

The latest of Auto Reviews is 2013 GMC Terrain Denali. Consider the following car reviews.

Sharper and more unique, the new Denali luxury trim available on the truckish GMC Terrain for 2013 is an almost nostalgic throwback to the American luxury SUV days of a decade ago. And yet the Terrain Denali is a notably modern interpretation, from its technology, to the fact that this chiseled and chunky truck is actually an efficient crossover.

FAST FACTS

1. Introduced on the Denali trim for 2013 is a more powerful 3.6L V6 with 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque, with the same EPA-rated fuel economy as the previous 3.0L V6.
2. Denali trim include signature badging, chrome accents and black leather interior trim with sporty red stitching.
3. An available Safety Package adds Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Park Assist as well as Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
4. Pricing for the Denali trim starts at $35,350.
It’s everything you would expect from a GMC truck – thick, brawny and imposing. With the Denali badging and chrome accents, the Terrain no longer looks like the stubby little brother of the Yukon and Sierra but an SUV of its own breed.

The new outer upgrades feature stylized satin chrome 18-inch wheels (19 with the V6), exhaust tips, a honeycomb front grille, side mirrors and door handles. The lighting treatments are impactful with large headlamps, bumper-integrated fog lights and muscular tail lamps. Spirited body-color fascias and rocker moldings set the Denali apart from other SUVs on the road, tying together what already looks good. Standard is the signature Denali script displayed prominently on the outside of each front door, while paint finishes come in exclusive color coats such as Quicksilver Metallic, Crystal Red Tintcoat, Carbon Black Metallic, Summit White and Iridium Metallic.

DRIVING FASHION AT HIGH SPEED

The standard engine in Terrain and Terrain Denali is the Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder with power rated at 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Those familiar to the compact crossover segment should find this perfectly suitable, although anyone from a truck background will likely desire more torque.

To satisfy their needs GMC is introducing an all-new V6 engine for 2013 in the Denali trim. Up from the old 3.0-liter V6, this larger displacement 3.6L unit with direct injection delivers 301 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. An increase of 14 percent more horsepower and 22 percent more torque than the previous 3.0L V6, it delivers the same 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Both front and AWD drivetrains are available for either engine, while the tow rating is set at 1500 lbs for the four-cylinder and 3,500 lbs for the V6.

The overall drive feeling of the Terrain Denali is "repose." While the engine power with the V6 is more than sufficient, the throttle is sluggish. There’s a transmission shifting option located within the shift lever, but it’s not a joy to use. The plus/minus toggle switch on the side of the lever is uncomfortable because your arm is resting in unnatural position and after a while the discomfort will force you to abandon the choice of choosing your gears. Paddle-shifting would have been ideal and brought a little more meat to the drive – particularly on a luxury truck.

What makes the overall driving experience of the Denali model an improvement, however, is the extensive list of technology aides – though some may find them bothersome. Included in the list are safety technologies such as Forward collision alert, lane departure Warning and Rear Park Assist.

The lane departure function is helpful, but experienced drivers will probably prefer to turn it off and avoid the annoyin alerts. This is, after all, a compact crossover and not a truck.

As for the forward collision alert (FCA) feature, it doesn't tamper with braking, leaving reaction time and responsibility up to the driver. Notifying you if you’re approaching another vehicle too quickly, FCA should be incorporated into all future vehicles in a time where people are talking and texting behind the wheel more than ever.

The electric power steering is nicely weighted, although overall the Terrain does feel a bit more SUV-like in terms of the driving dynamics than some of the new crossovers to hit the market – particularly cars like the Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5.

INSIDE THE TERRAIN DENALI'S STUDIO

In Denali trim, the Terrain features premium materials and includes equipment such as a standard sunroof, soft-touch leather, mahogany wood in the steering wheel, illuminated badged sill plates and distinctive red stitching on the seating and dashboard console. Seating is attractive with 8-way power driver and passenger seats embossed with Denali logos.

Unfortunately, while buyers can choose from varied metallic paint finishes outside, black leather is the only interior trim available.

Rear seat room is spacious thanks to the Terrain’s MultiFlex sliding second row, that can move forward and back by up to 8-inches. When pushed all the way back, the Terrain offers best-in-class second row legroom – making the space even more enjoyable to enjoy the independent dual 8-inch seatback-mounted screens for movies and video games.

Standard on the Denali trim is a power liftgate, giving easy access to the 31 cu-ft of rear cargo space – which expands to 64 cu-ft with the rear seats folded flat. More than a luxury touch, it’s a great piece of functional technology, especially for shorter stature drivers.

Seeing out the back is also made easy thanks to a back-up camera incorporated in the navigation screen.

CHECK THE TECH

One of our most-liked features is the IntelliLink software within the central infotainment console. The graciously-sized standard color touch radio with IntelliLink provides smartphone connectivity and voice activated control of the audio system and is easy to use to initiate phone calls, change radio stations, stream internet radio or control an iPod. The IntelliLink homescreen is even configurable, like your smartphone, with icons and functions that can be rotated or removed to accommodate the driver’s desire.

There are even icons for internet radio providers like Pandora and Stitcher, though the drawback is that internet streaming through a smartphone can pile up data charges on your monthly bill.

In addition to this technology, GM has developed the OnStar RemoteLink app for iPhone and Android devices, allowing drivers to lock and unlock doors or check fuel and tire pressure levels remotely. Plus, the app can also start the engine with the remote start accessory from anywhere a cellphone signal is present.

What's missing on such a premium draw is the ease of getting in and out via features like keyless entry and push button ignition.

THE VERDICT

The Terrain Denali is better than the standard model in all ways, providing an improved interior while capturing the attention of sidewalk onlookers with imposing SUV looks and plenty of chrome. Add V6 power to that and an extensive list of new technology features and there’s a lot to appreciate.

Of course, that also means there’s a lot to pay for with the Denali starting at $35,350. A still somewhat reasonable price for a compact crossover, add AWD and the V6 engine and the $38,600 puts it above the starting price for some luxury brand compact crossovers like the Acura RDX.

Still, the Terrain Denali is a worthwhile product with perhaps its best feature continuing to be its truck looks. Overshadowed in may respects in the past by its brother, the Chevy Equinox, perhaps the Denali trim is what the Terrain needed all along to make this boldly-styled small crossover relevant.
